Montcalm Defeats Jacks
SIDNEY, Mich. – The Alpena Community College women's basketball team dropped a conference matchup to Montcalm Community College, 91-49, on Friday afternoon at the MCC Activities Building.
The Lumberjacks (4-17, 0-11) struggled to find their offensive rhythm against the Centurions (9-15, 6-5), shooting just 26.2 percent from the field while Montcalm shot a much more efficient 40.4 percent.
Sophomore guard Saige Flaugher led Alpena with 23 points on 8-of-22 shooting, including 4-of-7 from three-point range. Flaugher played all 36 minutes and added seven rebounds and two assists in the losing effort.
Freshman post Brooke Portice recorded a double-double with 10 points and a team-high 16 rebounds, including nine offensive boards. Portice was also active defensively with three steals and two blocked shots while playing a team-high 39 minutes.
The Lumberjacks got six points apiece from Lillie Maser and Sarah Wyglendowski. Maser added six rebounds and two blocks, while Wyglendowski contributed three assists.
Montcalm dominated the second quarter, outscoring the Lumberjacks 36-10 to turn a 12-point first-quarter lead into a commanding 60-22 halftime advantage.
The Lumberjacks were outrebounded 43-42 but forced 18 Montcalm turnovers while committing 27 of their own. Alpena shot 68.8 percent from the free-throw line, converting 11 of 16 attempts.
