#24 Ranked Bay Defeats ACC
ALPENA, Mich. – The Alpena Community College women's basketball team celebrated Sophomore Night on Tuesday evening, honoring four key contributors before falling to visiting Bay College 98-45 at Park Arena.
At halftime, the Lumberjacks recognized sophomores Annabelle Herbolsheimer, Saige Flaugher, Allison Cece, and Abigail Platt for their dedication and contributions to the program as they were playing in their last home games at Park Arena.
Despite the emotional ceremony, ACC faced a challenging matchup against a Bay College squad that entered the contest ranked #24 in the country in NJCAA Division 2 with a 20-4 overall record and 9-1 conference mark. The visiting Norse dominated from the opening tip, building a 23-12 lead after the first quarter and extending their advantage to 52-22 by halftime.
For ACC, Brooke Portice led the way with 10 points and seven rebounds in 32 minutes of action. Sophomore Saige Flaugher contributed eight points and a team-high six assists while playing solid defense with three steals. Lillie Maser added 11 points and five rebounds in 38 minutes, while Allison Cece scored four points and blocked two shots.
The Lumberjacks struggled with turnovers on the night, committing 39 compared to just 13 for Bay College. Despite the challenges, Alpena showed resilience in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Norse 21-18 after being held to just five points in the third period.
The loss drops the Lumberjacks to 4-16 overall and 0-10 in conference play as they continue to search for their first league victory of the season.
While the scoreboard wasn't kind to the home team, the night provided an opportunity to celebrate four sophomores who have represented Alpena Community College with pride and determination throughout their careers. The Lumberjacks will look to build on their fourth-quarter performance as they continue their season on Saturday, Feb. 14 at Montcalm.
