ACC Women Open Conference Play With Win
The ACC Lumberjacks opened women's basketball conference play with a 49-40 win over host Kirtland Community College in Grayling.
Though the win was positive, a negative was an injury to Allie Urlaub who was on crutches after the game. Urlaub led all scorers with 18 points and also grabbed seven rebounds.
"Allie was the hottest shooter on the floor and carried us through most of the game," ACC coach Brandon Humphrey said. "When she went down, it was 'next man up mentality' and we came together and pulled it out as a unit."
The Lumberjacks led throughout - 17-10 after the first quarter, 33-20 at the half and 37-28 after three quarters, but the host Firebirds wouldn't go away easily, leading to the hard fought victory.
"We battled through adversity and a huge scoring drought in the third quarter, but held onto the lead," Humphrey noted. "Still a lot to clean up after the holiday break, but very happy with our first conference win!"
Makayla Kamyszek had seven points and seven rebounds. Emily Jackson corraled nine rebounds.
ACC (3-9 overall, 1-0 conference) will host Grand Rapids Community College at Park Arena on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 4:00 p.m.
