Lakers Top ACC in Men's Basketball
ALPENA, Mich. – The Alpena Community College Lumberjacks dropped their fifth consecutive conference game on Friday afternoon, falling to first place Mid Michigan College Lakers 101-59 at Park Arena.
The loss drops the Lumberjacks to 1-14 overall and 0-5 in conference play, while Mid Michigan improved to 14-4 and remained unbeaten in league action at 4-0.
Sophomore Kobe Johnson provided a bright spot for the Lumberjacks, leading all ACC scorers with 20 points on an efficient 8-for-15 shooting performance. Johnson also knocked down four three-pointers and added four rebounds, two steals, and an assist in 28 minutes of action.
Guard Brayden Franzel contributed nine points off the bench, hitting three of his five attempts from beyond the arc. Oliver Duthler added eight points, while Oluwatobi Ogunyode chipped in seven points in 15 minutes of reserve duty.
The Lakers showcased their depth and offensive firepower throughout the contest, placing five players in double figures. Caleb Lindsey paced Mid Michigan with 15 points on 5-for-7 shooting, while Zack Parks added 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
The Lakers controlled the game from start to finish, building a 49-27 halftime advantage before matching their first-half output with 52 second-half points.
Mid Michigan shot 49.3% from the field (35-for-71) and connected on 14 three-pointers, while converting 17 of 22 free throw attempts (77.3%). The Lakers dominated the glass with a 38-31 rebounding advantage and forced 21 Alpena turnovers while committing just seven themselves.
The Lumberjacks struggled offensively, shooting 37.7% from the floor and just 44.4% from the free-throw line. Point guard Derian Williams facilitated the offense with five assists in 32 minutes but was limited to five points on 2-for-13 shooting.
The Lumberjacks will look to break their losing streak and earn their first conference victory in their next outing at home when they host North Central Michigan College (2-15 overall, 1-4 conference) on Wednesday, Jan. 28.
