Men's Hoops Open in U.P.
The ACC Lumberjacks men's basketball team opened their season last weekend with a trip to Escanaba for the Terrace Bay Hotel Tip-Off Classic and suffered two defeats, 96-55 to Rock Valley College (IL) and 83-73 to Minnesota North College-Hibbing.
Against Rock Valley, ACC trailed only by 10 at the half but 57-26 advantage for the Golden Eagles put the game out of reach.
Derian Williams led the Jacks with 14 points. Kavon Patterson scored 13 and grabbed five rebounds in his ACC debut. Gary Reed had nine points and Chas Stanek grabbed nine rebounds.
The Lumberjacks led with nine minutes to go in the game at 67-66 but the Cardinals closed out the game on a 17-6 run for the victory.
In the first half, ACC led by as many as six and were up by eight points with 15 minutes to go in the game. 33% shooting from the floor was the determining factor as ACC yielded only seven turnovers in the game but came away with the tough loss.
Patterson scored 25 points shooting 9-17 from the field and 7-12 from the line and pilfering six steals. Williams tallied 14 points. Stanek and Reed tallied nine and eight respectively.
The Lumberjacks (0-2) will host Community Christian College in the home opener on Saturday, Nov. 8.
