Delta Upsets Lumberjacks at Home
The ACC men's basketball team finished the first trip around the MCCAA Northern Conference with a tough 72-65 loss to visiting Delta College.
With the defeat, the Lumberjacks fall to 6-11 overall, 4-3 in the conference. Delta (7-9, 1-5) picked up their first win in the conference. ACC stays in third place but are now three games behind the league leaders, Bay College (20-2, 7-0).
The Jacks led 33-24 at the half.
A pivotal stretch occurred with 13:10 to go in the second half when Davarion Mitchell went to the bench after picking up his third foul and ACC leading 46-42.
Delta scored 10 straight points in the next three and a half minutes to take a 52-46 advantage. They would never trail again.
The Lumberjacks cut it to three twice, first at 56-53 with 8:05 to go on a three-point play by Mitchell, and then with 1:19 to go on a Trevon Johnson long three-pointer that cut the lead to 68-65. What appeared to be a Delta turnover on the ensuing play was instead ruled an inadvertent whistle and the Pioneers kept the basketball.
With 48 seconds left, Delta missed a three and it appeared ACC may have the rebound but Daddy Hill couldn't corral the ball inbounds. The Pioneers set up an out of bounds play that led to an uncontested layup for a 70-65 lead to seal the game.
Trevon Johnson led ACC with 20 points. Mitchell scored 16 despite fouling out with six minutes left in the game. Elijah Hennings had 15 and Robert Williams tallied 12.
Kirtland Community College (0-11, 0-5) visits Alpena on Wednesday, Feb. 7 for a 7:30 tip.
