Great Comeback Comes Up Just Short
It’s not over ‘til it’s over.
That’s what the ACC men’s basketball squad showed last night against visiting Wayne County Community College District. The Lumberjacks trailed 37-14 at the half, and suffered a slow start to the second half where the deficit grew to 28 points, at 45-17.
Then the Jacks took over. Incredibly they outscored the Wildcats, 38-17 to get within seven points with just under a minute remaining.
The rally came up short, however, as Wayne held on for a 65-55 win.
“For many teams, such a start might have caused them to throw in the towel,” ACC assistant coach Nick Failla said. “Our guys showed that they are a team that knows how to respond to adversity and that will undoubtedly keep us competitive throughout the season. This determination is a crucial element in the pursuit of a winning season.”
A near capacity “Jack Pack” student section was rowdy and raucous throughout and gave the team a boost in the home opener.
Elijah Hennings led the Lumberjacks in scoring with 11 points. Terence Burton had a near double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds, as did Iansan Simpson with nine points and eight rebounds. Davarion Mitchell finished with six points and eight rebounds.
ACC (0-3) hosts the Lake Superior State JV squad on Monday at Park Arena for a 7:00 start.
