ACC Loses Late Despite Gem by Kosmerick
GADSDEN, Ala. — February 15, 2026
The Alpena Community College Lumberjacks closed out their weekend series at Gadsden State on Sunday, dropping both ends of a doubleheader by scores of 10-3 and 8-0 to fall 0-4 on the young season. But while the results again didn't go the Lumberjacks' way, the nightcap offered a genuine reason for optimism — and a name that Lumberjack fans may be hearing a lot this season: Ivan Kosmerick.
Gadsden State wasted little time making its presence felt in the opener, building leads of 2-0 after two innings, 5-0 through three, and 7-0 through four before ACC was able to put anything on the board. The Lumberjacks finally broke through in the fifth inning when Isaac Zocco scored on a sacrifice fly by Nate Gould, and the team added two more in the seventh on a clutch RBI single by pinch hitter Corbin Allen and an RBI single from Gould. The final was 10-3, Gadsden State.
Offensively, Miguel Salcedo was productive at the plate, going 2-for-3. Jonny Rensberry and Maxwell McCarty each contributed a hit, and Gould drove in a pair of runs in the late comeback effort. The Lumberjacks totaled seven hits on the day, showing they can make contact — the timing just needs to come together earlier in games.
On the mound, starter Jacob Brohl took the loss in his first start of the season, working 2.2 innings. Caleb McEwen and Mason McQuillin both saw action in relief.
If the opener was a tough lesson, the nightcap came with a silver lining bright enough to light the way north back to Alpena.
Making his college pitching debut, freshman Ivan Kosmerick was simply electric.
Taking the ball as the Lumberjacks' starter, Kosmerick navigated four innings of work against a Gadsden State lineup that had already feasted on ACC pitching earlier in the day — and he made it look almost routine. He allowed just one hit over four innings, surrendered zero runs, and struck out six Cardinals batters. At one point he struck out the side in the first inning, punching out three Cardinals batters in succession to strand a runner Gadsden had worked into scoring position. In the second, after walking Cooper and watching him steal second, Kosmerick executed a pickoff to end the threat cleanly. In the third, he again stranded the bases loaded — inducing a popup to end the inning with runners at second and third.
The final line for Kosmerick: 4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 6 K, 1 pickoff. For a college debut on the road against a Division I-caliber JUCO program, it was a performance that will turn heads.
Offensively in the nightcap, Corbin Allen was the standout, lacing a double in the seventh inning. AJ Wheelock and Aiden Bishop each added singles. The Lumberjacks left six runners on base and were held hitless until the third inning by Gadsden starter Jaden Eason, who was masterful with eight strikeouts over four innings. The Cardinals' offense erupted for four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to pull away.
Going on the road to face a strong Southern program four times in a weekend is never easy. Gadsden State entered Sunday's games already 6-2 on the season and improved to 8-2 with the sweep, riding a four-game winning streak and building on a 38-15 campaign a year ago that earned them a No. 2 seed in the ACCC Division I Regional Tournament. They played with the kind of speed, depth, and timely hitting that has made them one of the top junior college programs in the region. Being battle-tested against competition of that caliber can only help the Lumberjacks as the season progresses.
The Lumberjacks, now 0-4, will look to get in the win column when they travel to face the Snead State Parsons (4-3) in a doubleheader on Monday, February 16 in Boaz, Alabama. Snead State has been a dangerous club through seven games, posting a .300 team batting average and averaging more than nine runs per contest. It will be another stiff test, but one the Lumberjacks are capable of meeting.
