Baseball Closes Out Spring Trip
Tanner, Alabama — February 20, 2026
Alpena Community College's baseball team wrapped up its Alabama spring trip on Friday with a doubleheader in Tanner, dropping the opener to the Calhoun Warhawks before falling to the Lincoln Trail Statesmen in a run-shortened nightcap. Despite going 0-2 on the day, the Lumberjacks showed flashes of quality at the plate and gained valuable reps heading into the regular season.
The Lumberjacks jumped out to an early lead but couldn't hold back a Calhoun offense that erupted for seven runs in the first four innings.
ACC got on the board in the top of the first when Maxwell McCarty singled to drive in Aiden Bishop, who had reached and advanced on a sacrifice from Miguel Salcedo. The Lumberjacks added two more in the second on a McCarthy single to center that plated JJ Salas and Nate Gould, briefly pushing the lead to 3-0
Calhoun answered immediately and didn't look back. The Warhawks posted four runs in the bottom of the second with timely hitting and a pair of ACC miscues handing Calhoun the runs they needed to take control.
The Warhawks tacked on two more in the third and one in the fourth.
Jacks starter Ivan Kosmerick took the loss, giving up four earned runs in 3.1 innings while striking out five. Charlie Best came on and settled things down, striking out three across 2.2 solid shutout frames.
The Lumberjacks had chances to get back into it — ACC stranded runners in multiple innings and collected eight hits on the day — but couldn't deliver the clutch blow when it mattered. McCarty paced the offense with a 2-for-4 day and two RBIs, while Bishop and Salas each went 2-for-3.
The second game was a difficult one from the start. Lincoln Trail came out swinging, scoring in each of the first two innings and then detonating for a seven-run fifth that ended the game via run rule.
On the mound for ACC, starter Corbin Allen struggled with control in the first inning — allowing three runs while issuing a walk, hitting two batters, and surrendering a balk. Jacob Davis inherited the ball but was caught in a storm in the fifth, allowing five of his nine earned runs charged across 3.2 innings of work.
The Lumberjacks' lone run came in the fourth when Aiden Bishop scored on an RBI single by Marcus Castellon. Castellon was one of the Lumberjacks' bright spots, going 2-for-2 on the day.
The Alabama swing gave the Lumberjacks several days of live game action in warm weather against excellent competition, and while the results on Friday weren't what they were hoping for, there's plenty of season left to build on. The pitching staff will need to clean up walks and hit-by-pitches, and converting with runners in scoring position will be a key focus heading forward.
The Lumberjacks return home with the experience of a competitive spring trip under their belts and with the regular season just around the corner. ACC plays against Henry Ford next weekend at the Total Baseball facility in Wixom, MI.
