Lumberjacks Crush Aquinas in Fall Action
The ACC baseball team raised its fall record to 3-1 with two impressive wins over NAIA four-year school Aquinas College, beating the Saints 11-3 and 15-1.
The Lumberjacks stole 18 bases on the day, including 10 in game one.
Jake Zann had two doubles in three trips to the plate in the opener. Six other Jacks had a hit apiece. Max McCarty had a two-run ground rule double and Aiden Bishop doubled and scored. Kaleb Donajkowski had a bases clearing triple to break the game open. J.J. Salas singled and scored twice. Ryley White stole four bases and McCarty swiped two.
On the mound, four pitchers - Ethan Bergstein, Zach Holifield, Jacob Davis and Dylan Klein - combined on a six-hitter, striking out five. Klein threw two shutout innings while Holifield threw one, striking out two.
ACC's bats and legs went wild in the nightcap as a 12-hit, eight walk offensive attack led to the mercy-rule victory.
Luke Lovelace, Nate Gould and Marcus Castellon each had two hits. Castellon drove in four runs as did White, and Bishop and Miguel Salcedo each drove in three.
McCarty and Gould each scored three times while Bishop scored twice. Bishop, Salcedo and White all doubled.
Bishop stole three bases while Kaden Benaske and Donajkowski each stole twice.
Lumberjack pitchers Mason McQuillin, Ivan Kosmerick and Alex Jimenez combined on a three-hit, no earned run effort, walking only one and striking out six - four of the strikeouts by McQuillin. Kosmerick threw two shutout innings and Jimenez closed the game out with a shutout sixth.
ACC plays another four-year opponent Friday, Sept. 19 as they travel to play Lawrence Tech down in Southfield. Two former Lumberjacks - Brett Moroschan and Max Coughlin - play for the Blue Devils.
