Mixed Results for ACC on Weekend
College athletics can be less glamorous than one would think.
The ACC baseball team found this out the hard way Friday, leaving before dawn and returning after dark on a 500 mile round trip to Escanaba to play Bay College, losing 9-4 and 12-5. The Lumberjacks got to bed late Friday, up earlier Saturday, to beat Lakes Area Dodgers, 26-9 in a nine-inning game. The Dodgers are a high school travel team from Oakland County.
Against the Norse, Matt Thompson and Mitchell Walters led the hitters with four hits each. Thompson had two doubles and four RBI. Walters scored twice and stole three bases.
Kaleb Blaskowski had two hits and stole two bases.
On the mound, Aaron Guitar threw 4 1/3 innings without giving up an earned run in the opener. He struck out four. Brock Wing started game two and threw 2 1/3 no-hit innings, striking out seven.
Against the Dodgers, statistics were not available as the teams utilized free substitution for the scrimmage. Lumberjack coach Rob Enslen said that Caleb Stuck, Evan Fairbanks, Mitchell Walters and Hunter Kosmerick all had multiple hit games. Stuck, Fairbanks, Walters and Corey Victor each had extra base hits.
Pitching leaders were Logan Geitman, who threw two shutout innings, Wyatt Crawford and Nik Tulgestka.
Fall games do not count in official standings and regular season games begin in March. The Lumberjacks travel to play Saginaw Valley State next weekend.
